Learning Grammar, And Learning The Composition Process Essay

I’ve always enjoyed writing, and I’ve always been fairly good at it. In high school, I would receive high grades on most of my essays, if I even managed to turn them in. I was good at writing but not good at actually finishing what I write. Besides this, the problem I had most often with my essays was that they could be disorganized. I wasn’t very good at organizing my thoughts, and they were often jumbled. Taking English 1210 has certainly helped me improve this, along with other struggles I’ve had. This class felt easier than my past ones; however, I did learn more during this course than I did in other classes. I have achieved the learning outcomes for this course, which were defined for us in the syllabus. This course has helped me improve my writing and achieve these outcomes through classroom methodologies, learning grammar, and learning the composition process. There are four learning outcomes that were set at the beginning of the semester. These outcomes include: 1. The student will be able to use various forms of discourse, such as description, narration, exemplification, comparison/contrast and argumentation. 2. The student will be able to write full essays which incorporate a controlling idea stated in an introduction, developed in the the essay and summarized in the conclusion. 3. The student will be able to structure an argumentative essay using evidence and refuting the arguments of the opposition. 4. The purpose of this research is to identify the variables associated with euthanasia. It also discusses the variables associated with various types of euthanasia and suicide. I believe that elderly suicide is an example of active euthanasia, and therefore it is important to discuss the issue to have a better understanding of the social problem of euthanasia and suicide. I will also discuss variables that influence whether a person supports euthanasia or not, such as religious belief, gender, age, region, educational level, and marital status that influences how a person views the issue. I will also discuss the definitions of death. I will discuss the ethical and moral aspects of the problem of euthanasia. I will try to use Emile Durkheims social integration theory to explain the causes of active euthanasia, and suicide in general. I will also use Charles Tittles defiance category of deviance, which represents escape or withdrawal from active participation to social relationships or normative obligations to society. I want to integrate both Durkheims egoistic type of suicide, which applies to those that are inadequately integrated into society, and Tittles defiance category of deviance. I believe that both show a lack of social integration can increase the likelihood of suicide, and active euthanasia by those that lack coping skills, suffer from depression, have mental problems, and no longer value life. The lack of attachment to society and withdrawal from active participation in social relationships or social positions, which can increase the likelihood of active euthanasia or suicide, includes the following: 1) problems with the family, such as divorce, or the lose of a loved one; 2 ) interpersonal problems; 3) lack of problem solving; 4) depression; 5) drug and alcohol use; 6) health problems. These problems can influence the thought processes and coping behaviors that can lead to an increased likelihood of suicidal behavior. Euthanasia is the practice of painlessly ending the lives of people who have incurable, painful, or distressing diseases or handicaps. It may occur when incurably ill people ask their physicianor a friend or relativeto put them to death or to allow them to die. It may also occur when ill people ask others to help them commit suicide. Euthanasia is sometimes called mercy killing. Euthanasia is a very controversial issue. Some people believe patients should have an unqualified right to die. Others consider all forms of euthanasia to be murder or suicide and thus immoral. Still others approve of some forms of euthanasia and disapprove of others. Medical ethics is the field of study concerned with moral problems created by the practice of modern medicine. Medical ethics is divided into three branches: (1) public policy medical ethics, (2) biomedical ethics, and (3) clinical ethics. Public policy medical ethics deals with issues related to the regulation of medical practice by governments and by the governing boards of such institutions as hospitals and nursing homes. For example, state and federal governments establish spending limits for public health care. These limits raise ethical questions about the type and extent of medical services available to people who depend on public funds to pay medical bills. Other problems involving public policy include the control of medical research, the question of whether all citizens have a right to health care, and the availability of drugs for severe illnesses, such as AIDS. Biomedical ethics addresses moral questions that arise from the use of medical technology to begin or maintain a life. Many ethical questions focus on medical procedures that affect human reproduction. These include in vitro fertilization (starting human life in a test tube), the cloning (duplication) of human embryos, and abortion. Another important issue is euthanasia, the practice of painlessly putting to death people who are hopelessly injured or terminally ill. Clinical ethics evaluates the morality of decisions about medical care made by or with patients and their families. Problems of clinical ethics include deciding whether or not to remove life-sustaining treatment, making medical decisions for a severely retarded newborn or an unconscious person, and dealing with requests for euthanasia from patients or their families. The narrator of Tony Kytes is a cart driver who tells the story to someone who is returning to a local village after a 35 year absence. The reader is therefore placed in the position of the carts passenger. The story becomes funny rather than sad because the narrator had no involvement in the situation. Not being told about the wedding in detail makes the reader imagine how the wedding was and what went on. Tony Kytes ended up with the person whom he was originally intending to marry. In modern times this could be seen as an early stag night or indeed having second thoughts (cold feet). There were two women that were left out of the enjoyment, Unity and Hanna who was deeply hurt by Tony. Our Love Now was written by Martyn Lowery. It is about a mans and womans relationship that has been damaged, the man appears to have betrayed the woman in some way. The attitude of the two characters is different. The man wanted a reconciliation and is begging forgiveness, whilst the woman has no desire for this and accepts that it is over. I said, observe how the wound heals in time, how the skin slowly knits and once more becomes whole. She said, although the wound heals and appears cured, it is not the same. The form of the poem represents a conversation between the man and the woman. The reader is positioned objectively between the man and the woman. In this poem the writer uses alliteration. Observe the scab of the scald. The poem also uses metaphors and pacifying text as exampled by the following respectively. The tree is forever dead The breach in us can be mended The man is in hope that he will persuade the woman to into taking him back and is full of regret for what he has done. Whilst she is determined to stick to her opinion about the love they had. The writer portrays love in this poem as being sad and potentially damaging. One Flesh was written by Elizabeth Jennings. This poem is about the narrators parents and how their love had died (gone cold). The narrator is put across as a small child. The poem uses imagery, Her eyes fixed on the shadows overhead. This gives a picture in the readers mind of a girl looking on the shadows overhead which suggests a troubled childhood. And time itselfs a feather touching them gently. This imagery gives us a realistic theme a real feel for the poem. The mood of the poem is very sad, as a child is going through the break-up of her parents. The similarities between Our Love Now and One Flesh are that both poems are about a love that had died. The differences are that in One Flesh there is a child involved. The similarity between them all is someone in the texts is getting hurt. For example the narrator of One Flesh as a child, the man and woman in Our Love Now and Unity and Hanna in Tony Kytes. They differ as in the end Tony Kytes finds his true love but in Our Love Now and One Flesh the love is forever dead. As Tony Kytes is told by a narrator who is not involved in the story it becomes comical whereas One Flesh is told by the narrator who is directly involved and this makes the poem more real and have a sombre mood. Then with Our Love Now which has a tense a regretful mood as this is a conversation between two individuals. The love in Tony Kytes is young love and is just beginning and I would not call what Tony did love but pure lust. In Our Love Now and One Flesh the love was a mature one but has come to an end, this is perhaps why it is sad. The idea being portrayed about love is that it is very painful and this is demonstrated in all of the three passages. I conclude that Our Love Now was my favourite text as it used metaphors, alliteration and pacifying speech which I found particularly enjoyable because it stretched my imagination. I believe that the only true love shown in these passages comes from the love shown in One Flesh not from the parent but from the narrator (the child) towards her parents.
